Canadian diplomats evacuate children from Israel amidst escalating fear of wider conflict
The Canadian government decided to evacuate its diplomats’ children and guardians from Israel due to concerns about an escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Global Affairs Canada has authorized the temporary relocation of these individuals to a secure third country, while embassy staff in Israel are expected to remain in their positions.
“The Embassy of Canada to Israel in Tel Aviv, the Embassy of Canada to Lebanon in Beirut, and the Representative Office of Canada to the Palestinian Authority are all fully operational and providing essential services to Canadians, including consular services,” Global Affairs Canada announced in a statement on Wednesday evening.
Diplomats stationed in Ramallah in the West Bank and Beirut, Lebanon, do not have dependents residing with them.
“Our staff at missions in Lebanon and Ramallah are staying in place and receiving regular updates on the situation and the actions being taken by Global Affairs Canada,” the department added.
The recent tensions in the region following the assassinations of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and Hamas’s top political leader in Iran have raised concerns about a potential full-scale conflict in the Middle East.
