Canadian Hockey Legend Surprises Calgary Policeman Who Saved His Life by Bringing Stanley Cup
Hockey legend Lanny McDonald credits a Calgary policeman, Constable Jose Cives, for saving his life when he suffered a cardiac arrest in February of this year. Mr. McDonald, a former Hockey Hall of Fame forward who led the Calgary Flames to a Stanley Cup victory in 1989, expressed his gratitude towards Constable Cives during a fundraiser event held by the Calgary Police Association on May 31.
Accompanied by former teammates Tim Hunter, Colin Patterson, and Rick Wamsley, Mr. McDonald surprised Constable Cives by bringing along the Stanley Cup, which was passing through Calgary that day. This gesture was his way of thanking the officer for his life-saving actions.
In an interview with Calgary Flames TV, Mr. McDonald described Constable Cives as a local hero and acknowledged the role of two nurses who assisted during the cardiac event. The event took place at Calgary International Airport on Feb. 4, and Constable Cives recounted the high-pressure situation of trying to resuscitate Mr. McDonald in the midst of it.
Despite facing challenges during the resuscitation process, Constable Cives persevered, using an automated external defibrillator (AED) and refusing to give up until Mr. McDonald showed signs of recovery. The officer reflected on the intense moments of uncertainty during the life-saving efforts.
Following the successful resuscitation, Mr. McDonald received medical attention and the two individuals formed a close friendship. They now meet regularly for coffee, sharing stories and enjoying each other’s company.
Mr. McDonald expressed his admiration for the Calgary police officers and their impactful work in the community. Surprising them at their fundraiser with the Stanley Cup was a gesture of appreciation and recognition for their dedication and service.
As the Calgary Flames icon addressed the officers at the event, he commended them for their commitment to the community and expressed gratitude for their daily contributions.
