Canadian reported missing in aftermath of Taiwan earthquake discovered unharmed
Taiwan’s Central News Agency reports that a Canadian who went missing after the recent powerful earthquake on the island’s east coast has been located safe. The partially government-funded news agency, referencing the Central Emergency Operation Center, reveals that the Canadian man is currently camping near a hotel in Taiwan’s Taroko National Park. The man was previously identified as Nicolas Lapointe in a Chinese agency report. Global Affairs Canada has not yet responded to requests for confirmation. The 7.2-magnitude earthquake has claimed 10 lives, injured over 1,000 individuals, and left 636 people stranded due to rock slides and other quake-related incidents. The Central News Agency, citing Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, previously reported that three Canadians were rescued from the quake zone.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in Hualien County, 150 kilometers south of Taipei, resulting in building collapses, rock slides, and train disruptions across the island. Global Affairs Canada has indicated that 5,518 Canadian citizens are registered in Taiwan.
