Canadians Deserve Transparency on Chinese Interference in Our Affairs: Conrad Black

The gradual revelation of China’s interference in Canadian elections does not warrant concerns that it significantly altered the outcomes of the 2019 and 2021 general elections. Allegations suggest China intervened to support various candidates from the Liberal and Conservative parties, but there is no concrete evidence of substantial impact on the results.
Such interference is unacceptable and must be discouraged, regardless of the Chinese regime’s reaction. Questions arise about the cooperation between CSIS and the legal enforcement authorities, as well as the extent of Chinese ties to the government and its officials. The transparency of the investigation led by Prime Minister Trudeau and David Johnston, his close associate, remains questionable.
While attempts by China to influence Canadians are not uncommon, the scale of intimidation by a foreign power is concerning. Intervening in elections of established democracies is a bold step rarely taken by traditional states engaging in such activities.
In 1945, Igor Gouzenko exposed Soviet espionage in Canada, sparking the Western response to the Cold War initiated by Stalin. This conventional espionage was typical among major powers before the nation-state era.
There is no direct relevance to Canada, as the Communist Party was small, with only one communist MP, Fred Rose. Allegations regarding Chinese meddling in elections have not definitively influenced any election results. The inquiry revealed a funneling of funds to several Liberal and Conservative candidates in 2019, implicating key community members and politicians.
Canada seeks friendly relations with all nations, particularly the US, without compromising its sovereignty. The handling of Chinese meddling in elections has been perceived as amateurish, causing unease. Improved transparency and experience are necessary to address such challenges effectively.
The government’s portrayal of Canada as an untainted entity lacked credibility, and its approach to foreign relations needs refinement for greater public confidence.
