CAQ Whip Steps Down From Caucus to Pursue Conservative Nomination in Upcoming Federal Election
Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has recruited a new candidate from the Quebec government ranks to join his team.
Eric Lefebvre, the Coalition Avenir Québec government whip, is departing from the province’s ruling party to become an Independent before affiliating with the Tories in preparation for the upcoming federal election.
Mr. Poilievre expressed his pride in welcoming Mr. Lefebvre to the Conservative team through a post on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.
On April 16, Mr. Lefebvre announced his exit from the CAQ caucus but confirmed that he would continue to represent the Arthabaska riding in northeast Montreal as an Independent.
Quebec Premier François Legault shared on the X platform that he had requested Mr. Lefebvre to step down from the caucus.
Having previously run unsuccessfully for the federal Conservatives in 2008, Mr. Lefebvre initially secured the Arthabaska riding in a 2016 byelection and was re-elected in 2018 and 2022.
The upcoming federal election is scheduled to take place by October 2025.
