Carney Vows to Reduce Lowest Income Tax Bracket by 1 Percent in Campaign Kickoff Address
Minutes after asking Gov. Gen. Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament and trigger an election for April 28, Liberal Leader Mark Carney launched his campaign outside the Rideau Hall in Ottawa on March 23.
Carney made a new policy announcement during his speech, stating he would reduce the lowest-income tax bracket by one percent.
His speech heavily referenced the Trump presidency, highlighting the threat to Canada’s sovereignty and his desire for a “strong, positive” mandate to handle Trump.
Indirectly, Carney took aim at Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre, emphasizing that “negativity won’t make Canada strong.”
Carney emphasized the differences in opportunities and affordability between his generation and younger generations. He stated that his career experience has equipped him to tackle the current challenges facing Canada effectively.
Additionally, he discussed the $6 billion purchase agreement for Australian radar technology to enhance Arctic security and the increased engagement with France and the UK on security matters.
Carney highlighted the reversal of the capital gains tax increase, the removal of the carbon tax for consumers, and the commitment to impose the carbon price on major polluters instead.
He also mentioned his plans to eliminate interprovincial trade barriers and utilize the proceeds from Canada’s retaliatory tariffs to support Canadian workers.
