Chief Health Officer of Queensland Steps Down After Two Weeks Under New Government
He submitted his resignation in October while the Labor government was in caretaker mode.
The newly elected Queensland government will now search for a new chief health officer following the unexpected departure of Dr. John Gerrard.
On Nov. 8, Gerrard announced his decision to step down on Dec. 12, as his contract was nearing renewal.
He informed the previous Labor government of his choice in October, during its “caretaker mode” before the election.
Gerrard will go back to full-time clinical responsibilities at Gold Coast University, where he specializes in infectious diseases.
He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community and help guide the state’s response to the pandemic.
“Even though it was a challenging decision to step down as chief health officer, I am eager to go back to my patients in a full-time capacity and continue my work as an infectious diseases specialist.”
State Health Minister Tim Nicholls praised Gerrard for his significant impact on Queensland during the pandemic.
“Dr. Gerrard provided timely and accurate clinical advice, serving as a source of reassurance for many Queenslanders during uncertain times.”
Premier David Crisafulli commended Gerrard for his assistance to Queenslanders “during a really tough period” and his commitment to continue working on the front lines.
Gerrard assumed the position in December 2021 following Jeannette Young’s 15-year tenure before becoming the Queensland governor.
