Chief of Pacific Islands Forum Identifies Climate Change and Regional Tensions as Primary Concerns
Discussions on rising sea levels and extreme weather events are taking center stage at the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting in Tonga.
The Pacific Island Forum Secretary-General Baron Waqa addressed the leaders gathered in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, emphasizing the emerging threats facing the region, including climate change and escalating geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington.
Despite these challenges, Waqa expressed optimism in finding collective solutions to address the crisis. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing resilience in all policies and sectors, particularly in areas affecting people’s well-being such as health and education.
Waqa also underscored the significance of maintaining vigilance on regional security issues and securing the prosperity of future generations. He mentioned the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent as a collective vision to strengthen regional solidarity and advance the interests of Forum leaders.
“Our Forum leaders have the strength to discuss and decide on matters that will advance our region’s priorities. Despite being small island nations, we are a formidable force as a new Pacific continent,” he stated.
Beijing, Washington Should Fight Elsewhere: Waqa
While refraining from direct criticism of Beijing, Waqa reflected on past clashes with Chinese officials during PIF leaders’ meetings. He acknowledged the complexities of geopolitics and emphasized the need for larger countries to avoid escalating tensions in the Pacific, urging them to resolve conflicts elsewhere.
In the past, Nauru had diplomatic ties with Taiwan before switching recognition to Beijing earlier this year.
