Child in Cairns Accused of Sexual Assault at 10 Years Old

A 10-year-old boy in the community will not be placed in custody despite being charged with sexually assaulting an Italian traveller in Cairns.

A 10-year-old boy has been accused of sexually assaulting an Italian tourist in Cairns, as reported by the Queensland Police Service.

Cairns Police Detective Inspector Kevin Goan stated on May 9 that a call was received at 10 a.m. the day before, and the assault on the 23-year-old Italian woman took place in a busy shopping area in the city’s CBD.

“While the young lady was contacting the police, individuals in the group attacked her, throwing objects and punching her while she was on the phone with the police,” he explained in a statement to The Epoch Times.

Det. Insp. Goan mentioned that the woman sustained minor injuries in the “terrifying” situation.

Authorities revealed that the child was apprehended with the aid of the city’s CCTV network, and another member of the group has also been dealt with under the Juvenile Justice Act.

The boys are not currently in custody, although the police are well aware of their whereabouts.

Officers will also be investigating the involvement of other boys in the group.

“It’s a tragic situation that she had to endure within our community,” Det. Insp. Goan expressed.

“We are optimistic that this will not discourage her from experiencing the best of what Cairns has to offer.”

The Queensland Police Service disclosed that the 10-year-old boy was charged with offenses of sexual assault, common assault, and assault causing bodily harm while in a group.

The police inquiry into the alleged incident remains ongoing.
