China Conducts Fresh Military Exercises Near Taiwan
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry has stated that it will deploy ‘appropriate forces’ to safeguard its sovereignty, while the United States has expressed concerns about the risk of escalation due to the drills.
China’s military conducted new war games around Taiwan on Oct. 14, deploying planes and ships around the self-ruled island as a “stern warning” against “separatist” forces, according to Beijing.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry also announced that it will deploy “appropriate forces” to protect its sovereignty.
Just four days after Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te asserted that Beijing has no authority to represent Taiwan, the Chinese Communist Party’s military launched its “Joint Sword-2024B” drills, marking the fourth such exercise in two years.
During the drills, troops from the Chinese army, navy, and air force engaged in various activities, focusing on sea-air combat-readiness patrols and other maneuvers.
The United States voiced “serious concern” over the CCP’s military drills, with the State Department warning against the risk of escalation and urging restraint from Beijing.
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) strongly condemned the military exercises, emphasizing that Taiwan will not back down in the face of threats posed by the CCP.
Taiwan Vows to Resist ‘Annexation’
Lai, the Taiwanese President, reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to resisting annexation and encroachment on its sovereignty, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in the region.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken also cautioned against provocative actions by the CCP toward Taiwan, following Lai’s remarks.
The CCP’s hostility towards Taiwan has escalated since the election of the Democratic Progressive Party in 2016, leading to tensions between the two sides.
The CCP views Taiwan’s leaders as “separatists” who threaten its territorial claims over the island.
