Chinese Spy Turncoat Reveals Fresh Details About Dissident Whose ‘Suspicious’ Death in Canada Was Alleged to be a Message

A former Chinese spy has disclosed fresh details about the Chinese regime’s focus on a Chinese dissident who passed away in British Columbia in 2022.

Although the RCMP indicates that the death was not suspicious, it was highlighted as a cautionary signal last year to another exiled Chinese activist now residing in Toronto. The activist conveyed the warning in a telephone conversation with a friend in China, who reportedly felt pressured by Chinese authorities and referred to the death as occurring under “mysterious circumstances.”

The former spy, known only as Eric, defected to Australia last year and appeared on Australia’s ABC News program “Four Corners” on May 14 in an interview where the reporter described it as “the first time anyone from China’s secret police has gone public.”

Eric revealed that he was involved in various tasks and missions between 2008 and early 2023 as an undercover agent for the Political Security Protection Bureau, also known as the 1st Bureau, a clandestine unit within China’s Ministry of Public Security.

The 39-year-old former spy mentioned that the missions were focused on monitoring, abducting, and silencing members of the Chinese diaspora globally.

One of Eric’s targets was Hua Yong, an artist and long-time critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) originally from Beijing. Mr. Hua tragically passed away in Canada while kayaking on a cold autumn night, according to official police reports.

Prior to settling in British Columbia, Mr. Hua sought sanctuary in Bangkok, Thailand, after documenting Beijing’s forced evictions of migrant workers in 2017 and sharing the footage online. Eric was dispatched to Thailand to handle this situation.

‘Maybe He’d Been Killed’

Eric’s handlers supported his plan to create a fake anti-CCP online persona and produce revolutionary videos to approach Mr. Hua.

The ABC News program showcased a brief clip from a video where Eric appeared in the Thai jungle, posing as a spokesperson for a militia group named “V Brigade,” urging Chinese residents to prepare for armed resistance against the CCP.
