Christian Social Worker to Challenge Tribunal Ruling in Discrimination Case.
Felix Ngole faced discrimination when an NHS provider withdrew a job offer due to his Christian views on homosexuality. Despite part of his claim being upheld, the employment tribunal ruled that there was no discrimination in not hiring him.
Ngole, who previously won a case against Sheffield University for similar reasons, was offered a job by Touchstone Leeds but had it rescinded after his beliefs were discovered. He was then questioned about his views and told the offer would remain withdrawn unless he embraced and promoted homosexual rights.
The tribunal acknowledged direct discrimination but rejected further claims, causing concern for Christian freedoms and free speech according to the Christian Legal Centre.
Touchstone argued that Ngole’s views could harm LGBT service users, leading to the decision not to hire him. However, Ngole maintained that his beliefs would not impact his care for any service user.
The ruling found direct discrimination but agreed with Touchstone’s concerns about Ngole’s beliefs potentially harming service users. Ngole plans to appeal the decision as it creates a dangerous precedent for blocking those who do not promote LGBTQI+ ideology from employment.
The Christian Legal Centre and Ngole expressed disappointment in the ruling, emphasizing the impact it could have on individuals holding protected beliefs in various professions.
Touchstone defended their decision, stating their commitment to supporting the LGBTQI+ community while upholding their values and protecting service users and staff.
