Climate Activists in Melbourne CBD Face Charges Following Blockade

Extinction Rebellion has been actively campaigning across Australia’s busiest areas in the fight against climate change.

Climate change activists in Melbourne, Victoria were recently arrested for staging a blockade at Flinders Street Station.

On March 16, over 30 activists refused to move from the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets, following a protest march in the city later in the afternoon.

The protesters chanted slogans like “People power, power to the people,” and “Climate crisis,” while displaying signs like “Doing it for the kids I love” and “Free Palestine.”

Police arrested 32 individuals who remained on the road, with 27 of them facing charges for obstructing the road.

The activists’ actions were documented and shared by Extinction Rebellion Victoria on March 17.

Throughout the week, Extinction Rebellion organized multiple protests in the city as part of their “disrupt the city” campaign.

Despite the arrests, activists continue to call for a climate emergency declaration.

Incidents like the Melbourne protest have been occurring in other parts of Australia, such as a recent demonstration in Perth against a major Woodside gas project.

Activists at the Perth protest demanded the cancellation of the gas project due to environmental concerns, drawing attention to issues like emissions and climate action.

Following these events, police have taken action against protesters, issuing move-on notices and making arrests to maintain public order.
