Community Backlash Prompts Regional Council to Restore Australian Flag to Airport

A regional Queensland council has pledged to restore the Australian flag to its airport after it was taken down.

The sudden disappearance of the flag from Hervey Bay Airport on April 23 has left many in the community upset, especially with Anzac Day approaching.

The removal was first brought to light by airport worker Scott Mason in a social media post, where he claimed that Fraser Coast Regional Council had instructed the flag to be removed from above the passenger screening point.

Mason, a self-identified ex-serviceman, criticized the move as disrespectful to national pride and insulting to the flag that represents the country.

Although there was reportedly one complaint about the flag, no details about the nature of the complaint were provided.

“On the eve of Anzac Day, I can only imagine how the diggers who protected this land and their families would feel disrespected by this act,” Mason expressed.

As a response to the flag’s removal, some concerned locals have called for a demonstration at the airport.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour moved quickly to address the situation, refuting claims that the council had instructed the flag’s removal.

“We are aware of an incident where the Australian flag at Hervey Bay Airport was taken down without council approval,” Seymour stated on social media.

“While this was not an authorized action, we acknowledge that it was done without malice and in response to concerns about flag protocols.”

Seymour assured that the flag would be reinstated and said that steps would be taken internally to clarify procedures going forward.

“We appreciate the understanding of our community and reaffirm our respect for the Australian Flag and its significance,” he added.

The council has been asked about who made the decision to remove the flag.

Contact has also been made with Hervey Bay region’s Division 9 councillor, Sara Diana Faraj, who assumed the role of deputy mayor on April 23, for comment.

Hervey Bay Airport is a key regional tourism destination with regular flights to Brisbane and Sydney.

The airport is serviced by Qantas, Jetstar, and Lady Elliott Island flights.
