Competition Bureau Takes Legal Action Against Rogers Over Unlimited Data Claim

The Competition Bureau is taking legal action against Rogers Communications Inc. for allegedly misleading consumers with false claims of offering unlimited data in its “Infinite” wireless phone plans.

The bureau asserts that Rogers’ advertisements create a misleading impression that the plans provide limitless data, when in reality data speeds are severely reduced once a data cap is reached, by over 99 percent.

The bureau has filed an application with the Competition Tribunal to stop Rogers from using misleading advertising, impose a penalty, and provide restitution to Infinite wireless phone plan customers.

Rogers, on the other hand, defends the clarity and truthfulness of its advertising for the Infinite plans and plans to dispute the litigation. It argues that such plans are common in the industry and questions the bureau’s decision to target Rogers after five years.

Competition Commissioner Matthew Boswell emphasizes the importance of accurate and truthful information for Canadians when purchasing essential services like wireless data plans.
