Concerned Quebecers Fear for Family Members as Crisis Unfolds in Haiti
Wedne Colin expresses feeling like he is living a “double life,” residing in Montreal but constantly worrying about his family in Haiti.
He shares that his family members have had to flee their homes multiple times to seek safety from the armed gangs that have taken control of the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
Mr. Colin and Orlando Ceide, colleagues at the Maison d’Haiti community center, are among the many Haitian Montrealers concerned about their loved ones amidst the violent attacks that have paralyzed the Haitian capital.
Mr. Ceide mentions that while his family in Haiti is not directly in harm’s way, the current crisis is affecting the availability of essential services like food and healthcare.
Both men emphasize the importance of the Canadian government assisting Haitians, including facilitating easier pathways for them to reunite with their families in Canada.
They also believe Canada can contribute to diplomatic efforts to stabilize the country but emphasize that Haitians themselves must lead the way in resolving the crisis.
