Conrad Black Dismisses Calls for Canada to Recognize Palestinian Statehood as Unreasonable
Commentary
The fervent support for the Palestinian cause in many Western countries has been a disturbing display of misguided righteousness, trend-following, and racist prejudice.
Last week, after Ireland, Norway, and Spain suggested recognizing a potential Palestinian state, Canada’s New Democratic Party proposed the same. This move by the NDP was merely a result of political opportunism. It reflects the Western habit of attempting to appease both sides in a conflict where only one can emerge victorious.
For the past 25 years, Hamas, ruling Gaza through terror, and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank could have established their own state if they had accepted Israel’s existence as a Jewish state, a commitment they made during the Oslo Accords in 1993 but never fulfilled. The lack of mutual agreement and coherent Palestinian leadership makes pursuing peace through a two-state solution challenging at this time.
The fragmented and discredited Palestinian leadership, combined with the absence of a credible negotiator to engage with the Israeli government, hinders progress towards peace talks.
The NDP’s decision appears to be driven by a desire to align with the vocal left, including university radicals and inciters of chaos. It stands as a way to differentiate themselves from the Liberals in the eyes of those who irrationally support Hamas.
Despite its transformation into a prosperous, modern city in recent decades, Ireland’s strong pro-Palestinian stance remains puzzling. The country’s historical struggles seem disconnected from its current overwhelming support for Palestine.
