Conservative MP Scheer Criticizes Marx on His Birthday, Highlighting Communist Philosopher’s Financial Struggles
Former Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer criticized the “evil philosophy” of economist and political philosopher Karl Marx on his birthday. He referenced a biography where Marx’s mother preferred him to make money rather than write about it.
Scheer made the remarks on social media on May 5, describing Marx’s birthday as a metaphor for governmental policies inspired by Marx, such as those of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
He drew parallels between Trudeau’s policies and Marx’s behavior of accruing debt, living off others’ production, and spending on unnecessary things to maintain an illusion of prosperity.
Scheer also shared an excerpt from David McLellan’s book “Karl Marx: His Life and Thought,” which highlighted Marx’s financial struggles, his mother’s desire for him to focus on making capital rather than just writing about it, and his lavish spending habits despite his debts.
While Marx is best known for works like the Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital, his financial struggles and anti-Semitic views are lesser-known aspects of his life.
In an article published in 2018, Spectator magazine highlighted Marx’s anti-Semitic views and his linking of Judaism to capitalism, suggesting that being Jewish would be “impossible” in a post-capitalist world.
Reports suggest a rise in anti-Semitism on Canadian campuses and in cities following the conflict between Hamas and Israel, with some attributing these sentiments to Marxist ideologies.
