Conservative Party Faces ‘Leave or Die’ Dilemma with ECHR, According to Jenrick
Fellow Tory leader candidate James Cleverly has proposed increasing defence spending to 3 percent, asserting that the NHS requires reform rather than additional funding.
Robert Jenrick, a leadership candidate for the Conservative Party, emphasized the importance of the UK’s membership in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), stating that it is a crucial issue for the party. Jenrick argued that the ECHR’s influence needs to be addressed to regain control over the country’s laws and borders.
Speaking at an event during the party conference, Jenrick criticized the ECHR for hindering the deportation of criminals, terrorists, and illegal immigrants. He called for an end to the ECHR’s influence, highlighting its impact on legal cases and the cost to taxpayers.
Jenrick emphasized the need to address the ECHR issue to tackle mass migration effectively and secure the country’s borders. He warned that the party’s future depends on resolving this issue.
Jenrick, along with other leadership candidates such as James Cleverly, Kemi Badenoch, and Tom Tugendhat, will present their stances to Conservative MPs before upcoming voting rounds. They will focus on key issues such as defence spending and NHS reform.
Cleverly, a former military officer, believes that reducing welfare spending could allow for an increase in military spending. He highlighted the need to balance priorities and mentioned the significant cost associated with engaging in warfare.
Cleverly also addressed the issue of NHS funding, stressing the importance of meaningful reforms to address systemic issues within the health service. He advocated for a shift towards preventive measures and early diagnosis to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.
