Conservatives Claim to Offer Solution for Online Harassment Following Alleged Liberal Failures
Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner has announced that her party will present a bill in the House of Commons next week aimed at safeguarding individuals from online harassment.
Rempel Garner criticized the Liberals for their unsuccessful attempts to address online criminal harm over the past decade, stating that her bill will modernize existing laws on criminal harassment. This will allow victims to request a judge to compel social media platforms to reveal the identity of repeat online harassers.
The proposed bill also includes provisions that require online companies to provide parents with tools to protect their children and implement algorithms to confirm a user’s age without requiring a digital ID.
Rempel Garner asserts that her approach will not infringe on freedom of speech, contrary to criticisms of the Liberals’ previous online harms act introduced last winter.
The Liberal legislation aimed to impose new obligations on social media companies to prevent sexual victimization, hatred, and bullying, along with establishing a new regulatory body for enforcement.
