Conservatives Demand Explanation on How Suspected Terror Plotters Entered Canada
After the RCMP arrested a father and son in Toronto in connection with an ISIS terror plot, the federal Conservatives are urging the House public safety committee to reconvene and investigate how they were able to enter Canada.
During a press conference on Aug. 6, Conservative MP and House leader Andrew Scheer stated, “Conservatives are calling on the Bloc and NDP to support our efforts to recall the Public Safety Committee so we can investigate all the aspects of this disturbing and shocking event.”
Scheer mentioned that Tory MP and public safety critic Frank Caputo wrote a letter to Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc asking for the details of the terrorist plot to be made public for Canadians to receive answers.
The RCMP stated that while the pair were planning a violent attack in Toronto, their arrest eliminated any further threat to the public.
Scheer revealed that Ahmed Eldidi was allowed into Canada and later granted citizenship, which he described as a “colossal failure” of the national security system.
He emphasized, “Canadians have a right to know how this individual entered Canada and became a citizen. Canadians deserve to know if others with similar backgrounds have entered our country.”
Scheer insisted that the incident’s details have not been disclosed publicly, making it crucial to reconvene the public safety committee. He stated that LeBlanc would be the first witness called to testify, followed by officials responsible for overseeing such security screenings.
He concluded, “To ensure trust in our immigration system, proper screening must be done in every case. This was not the case here, and lives were endangered.”
