Controversy Erupts Over New Height Laws for Football Tackles
The Rugby Football League (RFL) recently announced new tackle height law changes across all age groups and competitions, prompting backlash from fans.
The two main changes to tackle laws set to take effect by 2025 include a ban on tackles above armpit level and a removal of tackling altogether for youth players under six to under nine, with a switch to tag/touch rugby instead.
These changes have sparked a petition against them, with almost 5,000 signatures collected within a short time.
Amateur coach James Dudley, who initiated the petition, expressed concerns that these changes are eroding the essence of the sport and the values it teaches. Many signees objected to the removal of tackling at a young age, emphasizing the importance of teaching proper technique early on.
The RFL justified the changes as part of a project called “TaCKLE” in collaboration with Leeds Beckett University, aiming to research tackle and contact kinematics, as well as loads and exposure. The ban on tackles above the armpit was trialed in 2023 at an under 18 competition, showing promising results in reducing head contact and accelerations.
While these changes have raised concerns and objections, the RFL is determined to proceed with the upcoming law changes in the sport.
