Coroner’s Inquest Investigates the Use of Midazolam in Man’s Death
It is claimed by Derek Dimmock’s family that he was effectively euthanised through the use of end-of-life drugs in June 2020, despite not being on the brink of death. An inquest is currently underway regarding his death, with evidence being presented to investigate the administering of these drugs, including midazolam, which led to his passing.
Derek, aged 86, was taken to the Royal Trinity Hospice in Clapham when he was suffering from pain caused by gout. Shortly after being admitted, he was put on a combination of end-of-life drugs, including midazolam, oxycodone, and alfentanil, as doctors believed he was close to passing away. His condition deteriorated rapidly after the drugs were administered.
Despite suffering from age-related health issues, Derek’s family insists he was not in imminent danger of death before being brought to the hospice, contradicting the medical staff’s assessment. The family disputes the need for the drugs that were given to Derek and accuses the medical team of hastening his death.
Accusations of Bias
The inquest has uncovered discrepancies between the family’s account and the medical staff’s testimony. Derek’s son, Paul, accused the coroner of bias in favor of the hospice’s counsel, leading to a pause in the proceedings.
