Counsellor Reveals Devastating Impact of Abortion Trauma on Women



“How do you cope with the fact that you have actually played a role in the death of your child? No woman who has undergone an abortion can ever fully recover from the emotional trauma of the procedure,” says Lyn Varty, a counselor and manager of Hope Alive Australia. According to Varty, every mother she has counseled has been able to identify the exact moment when the abortion shattered their lives. She explains that the impact of abortion on women goes beyond normal grief and is more complex. Varty has found that childhood neglect and abuse are often present in the lives of women affected by abortion. This early trauma dehumanizes them and makes them more susceptible to being coerced into getting an abortion. Abortion clinics often use language and descriptions that further dehumanize the unborn child, making it easier for women to accept the procedure. The dehumanization process begins in childhood and is completed through abortion. Varty has observed that after an abortion, women’s lives tend to fall apart, leading to relationship issues, job instability, depression, and even substance abuse. These behavioral patterns are often tied to the anniversary dates of the abortion. The impact of abortion extends beyond the women who undergo the procedure, affecting their families, future children, and spouses. Domestic violence, for example, often increases during pregnancy, particularly if the man is against the abortion. Abortion breaks the trust a mother has in herself as a protector and nurturer, which can impact her relationship with subsequent children. The ripple effect of abortion on society is significant. However, Varty offers hope and emphasizes that healing is possible. She wants to let those impacted by abortion know that they are not solely responsible for the loss of their child and that others, such as abortionists, doctors, nurses, politicians, and even society as a whole, share in the responsibility. Varty has witnessed individuals successfully leaving toxic relationships, improving their mental and physical health, and contributing positively to life after receiving support and treatment. While complete healing may never be achieved, they learn to accept their scars and find purpose in their lives again.
