Court of Appeal Rejects Child Serial Killer’s Bid to Challenge Convictions
Former nurse Lucy Letby, 34, who was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others, has been denied permission to appeal her convictions.
Child serial killer Lucy Letby has had her appeal rejected by the Court of Appeal.
During a two-and-a-half day hearing last month, Letby’s lawyers sought approval from senior judges to appeal her convictions for the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of six others.
In a short hearing on Friday, Dame Victoria Sharp, alongside Lord Justice Holroyde, announced that Letby’s request had been denied.
Dame Victoria stated: “After hearing her application, we have decided to reject the appeal on all grounds and dismiss all related applications. A detailed judgment will be provided at a later time.”
With the judges refusing to permit the challenge, Letby’s appeal process has come to an end.
The full reasoning behind the judges’ decision was not disclosed, and the specifics of Letby’s appeal bid cannot be made public for legal reasons.
Dame Victoria had previously mentioned that Letby’s appeal was based on four points concerning the judge at her trial rejecting legal applications.
The 34-year-old former nurse was convicted in August 2023 for the murders and attempted murders of infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital from 2015 to 2016.
During Letby’s trial at Manchester Crown Court, the jury could not reach verdicts on six counts of attempted murder involving five children.
She is set to face a retrial in June on a single charge of attempting to murder a baby girl, identified as Child K, in February 2016.
The identities of the surviving and deceased children who were at the center of the allegations are protected by a court order.
