CRTC Postpones Rollout of Next-Generation 911 Service by Two Years
Canadians will have to wait another two years for next-generation 911 service, which would enable them to send texts or videos to request help.
The deadline for transitioning to next-generation 911 that was initially set for Tuesday by the CRTC has now been extended to March 2027.
The telecom regulator cited the lack of readiness among most provincial, territorial, and municipal emergency services as the reason for the postponement, despite the readiness of telecom companies.
Various groups, including representatives of police, fire, and paramedic chiefs, warned the CRTC that without an extension, some Canadians might lose access to 911 service, posing an unacceptable risk to public safety.
