CSE Warns that Civil Society Faces Significant Cyber Threats from State-Sponsored Actors
According to Canada’s cyberspy agency, countries like Russia and China are increasingly targeting non-profit and advocacy groups, journalists, and human rights activists.
In a joint advisory with the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Estonia, and Finland, the Communications Security Establishment is issuing a warning.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security at CSE states in a release that there is a growing cyber security threat from state-sponsored actors targeting civil society, which is considered to be at “high risk.”
The advisory highlights Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea as the main sources of this threat.
Not only are civil society groups being targeted, but also academic, cultural, and diaspora organizations, along with individuals working to promote democracy.
The advisory cautions that threat actors are employing highly personalized and covert tactics, and are dedicating significant resources to researching their targets.
