CSIS Director Admits Uncertainty About Presence of CCP Agents on Federal Payroll
The head of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) acknowledges the challenge of confirming the presence of Chinese agents within the federal government.
David Vigneault, speaking at the House of Commons Special Committee on Canada-China Relations (CACN), highlighted the ongoing efforts by China to infiltrate Canadian institutions.
He expressed concerns about China’s attempts to acquire technology and data through various means, emphasizing the difficulty in achieving complete clarity on the matter.
The committee is investigating the security clearances given to two Chinese Canadian scientists at the Public Health Agency of Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, who were later removed amid an RCMP investigation.
When asked about scientists involved in CCP recruitment programs, Vigneault mentioned ongoing investigations limiting his ability to provide details.
Regarding reassurances to Canadians about potential infiltration, Vigneault explained the covert nature of such activities, stating that China constantly adapts its methods to avoid detection.
Conservative MP Michael Chong raised concerns about the security of government labs and questioned the steps taken to prevent espionage activities within the government.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc acknowledged the need for security measures and emphasized the need for ongoing vigilance against foreign interference.
Bloc Québécois MP René Villemure inquired about potential naivety in dealing with China, to which LeBlanc highlighted the evolving nature of relationships with foreign entities.
