Czech Defense Minister Urges Withdrawal From UN, Criticizing Gaza Resolution for ‘Supporting Terrorists’

Only 14 countries voted against the resolution, which did not mention Hamas’s actions in Israel. The Czech Republic’s defense official is urging her country to withdraw from the United Nations after the organization approved a ceasefire resolution for Gaza that disregarded Hamas’s killings and kidnappings of civilians in Israel. The Czech Republic was one of the 14 U.N. members that opposed the resolution, which passed with overwhelming support from 120 countries and 45 abstentions. An amendment from Canada, which sought to condemn Hamas’s atrocities and demand the release of hostages, was defeated in a vote of 88 to 55. Only Austria, Hungary, the United States, Israel, Paraguay, and a group of Pacific Island states also opposed the resolution. Czech Defense Minister Jana Černochová expressed her disappointment with the U.N., stating that the Czech Republic should not be part of an organization that supports terrorists and disregards the right to self-defense. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, however, believes that the country should maintain its presence in the U.N. to advocate for its positions. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský also rejected the idea of withdrawing from the U.N. and emphasized the importance of working within a stable and predictable framework to advance national interests. The resolution was passed as Israel continues its assault on Gaza, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating that the fight may be long and difficult to eliminate Hamas’s capabilities. The U.N. Security Council, which has the power to enforce resolutions under international law, has also failed to deliver a resolution to halt the conflict. The United States vetoed a Russian-drafted resolution that called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and condemned both Hamas and Israel for their actions. Despite the setback, the U.S. aims to continue working towards a peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians. In the meantime, the U.S. is providing Israel with ammunition for its Iron Dome defense system and has deployed aircraft carrier strike groups to the eastern Mediterranean Sea to deter hostile actions and prevent further escalation.
