Decayed Skeletons Found at Former Hitler Base Too Deteriorated for Identification and Cause of Death

WARSAW, Poland—Polish prosecutors have concluded an investigation into human remains found at a site where German dictator Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders once resided during World War II. The advanced decay of the skeletons made it impossible to determine the cause of death, a spokesman announced on Monday.

The discovery was made on February 24 at Wolf’s Lair, which functioned as Hitler’s main headquarters from 1941–1944 when the region was part of Germany. This compound consisted of approximately 200 Nazi bunkers and military barracks concealed in dense woods. The failed assassination plot on Hitler by Col. Claus Stauffenberg occurred on July 20, 1944, in this area. Today, the site is a popular tourist destination.

After being located by a local group, Latebra, which specializes in historical artifact hunting, the remains were secured by police officers. A forensic medical specialist examined the remains under the prosecutor’s supervision to determine if foul play was involved. However, the investigation was terminated in late March due to insufficient evidence of a criminal act, according to Mr. Daniel Brodowski, the spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in the nearby town of Ketrzyn.

Mr. Brodowski stated in an email to The Associated Press, “The expert analysis indicated that the preserved bone fragments belonged to human beings and originated from at least four individuals, three of whom were likely middle-aged men, and the fourth was a child of unspecified gender in its early years.” He further mentioned that due to the advanced deterioration of the remains, establishing the cause of death was no longer feasible, as several decades had passed since their decomposition.
