Devon Households Cleared to Drink Tap Water After Parasite Outbreak is Resolved
South West Water has successfully repaired a damaged valve that may have led to contamination, and regular testing will persist across the network.
After a parasite outbreak in Devon, thousands of households have been informed that they can now safely drink tap water as boil water notices have been lifted by the region’s water supplier.
The notices were issued by South West Water on Wednesday following confirmed and suspected cases of cryptosporidium in the Brixham area of Devon, affecting around 17,000 households and businesses after test results detected traces of the organism.
The UK Health Security Agency confirmed 46 cases of cryptosporidium on Friday with more expected. By Saturday, approximately 14,500 households in the Alston supply area were cleared to use tap water safely, while around 2,500 properties in Hillhead, upper Brixham, and Kingswear must continue to boil water before consumption.
SWW isolated and repaired a damaged valve in the Hillhead supply area, believed to be the source of contamination, and is investigating the incident to rule out other potential sources of contamination.
Upon rigorous testing and consultation with relevant authorities, SWW made the decision to lift the boil water notice in the Alston water supply area, apologizing for the disruption caused and committing to resolving the issue completely.
Customers are urged to visit the company’s website or call for updates on affected areas and will receive an additional £100 in compensation if still impacted.
Dr. Bayad Nozad from UKHSA advised those still under the boil notice to continue boiling their drinking water. Conservative MP Anthony Mangnall criticized SWW’s response, emphasizing the need for accountability and compensation for affected businesses.
Water minister Robbie Moore stressed the importance of resolving the issue promptly for clean water to return to Brixham.
SWW will continue providing bottled water at designated stations in the area while emphasizing the importance of boiling water for consumption. Residents are encouraged to maintain normal water use for washing, bathing, and flushing toilets despite the outbreak.
