Dislike the Lengthy Commute on Canada Day? Dispute Between Ottawa Mayor and Federal Government over Transit Strategy
Attendees of Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa can avail of free public transit, although access to the nearest train station will not be permitted for the event.
The main stage is located at LeBreton Flats, but users of light-rail transit will need to disembark at Lyon Station, which is over a kilometer away.
Individuals with mobility issues will have access to the station closest to the festivities, while others will be required to walk.
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe attributed this decision to the federal government in a social media statement, stating that the city proposed alternative solutions.
Mr. Sutcliffe mentioned that the issue stems from federal organizers not wanting crowds of people walking on the Booth Street Bridge after leaving the LRT.
However, Families Minister and Kanata—Carleton MP Jenna Sudds stated that a committee primarily comprised of municipal and emergency response officials made the decision, and suggested that the city should find a better resolution for future events.
