TORONTO—Donald Trump Jr., the son of former U.S. President Donald J. Trump, expressed his opposition to what he referred to as the “radical transgender agenda” in a speech delivered in Toronto on May 10.

During a conference organized by the social media video website Rumble and Canadian media outlet Rebel News, Mr. Trump spoke out against the influence of teachers on children’s decisions regarding gender identity, criticizing the idea of permanent sex change operations and hormonal treatments pushed by schools and doctors.

Other speakers at the conference included journalist Glenn Greenwald, media personality and lawyer David “Viva Frei” Freiheit, and Rebel founder Ezra Levant, who discussed social and freedom of speech issues.

Mr. Trump touched on various Canadian topics, such as the struggles of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to recruit new members, attributing the decline in recruitment numbers to societal emphasis on issues like transgender rights and programs like drag queen story hours on military bases.

CAF recruitment has been declining for years, prompting Defence Minister Bill Blair to warn of a potential “death spiral” for the military if trends persist. The minister assured that efforts are being made to attract more talent to the CAF.

Mr. Trump also criticized the proposed LGBT monument in Ottawa, questioning the use of funds and implying negative consequences of raising capital gains taxes.

The increase in capital gains taxes, part of the 2024 budget, has faced backlash from various groups, such as small businesses and medical professionals, who anticipate adverse effects like professionals leaving the country. The government argues that the tax hike will only impact a small percentage of Canadians and businesses, aiming to have the wealthiest individuals bear the burden of government expenses.

Treatment of Protesters

Mr. Trump also drew parallels between the treatment of Freedom Convoy protesters in 2022 and ongoing pro-Palestinian protests, highlighting disparities in government responses and treatment of individuals involved in the demonstrations.

Tamara Lich, a key figure in the Freedom Convoy, raised concerns about Bill C-63, a topic extensively discussed by other speakers at the conference, including Ezra Levant, who outlined the implications of the bill in his opening remarks.

Online Harms Bill

The newly proposed Online Harms legislation aims to enhance online protection for children and combat hate speech, introducing stringent penalties for online platforms that fail to restrict certain content. However, these provisions have faced criticism from civil liberties groups and free speech advocates for potentially infringing on freedom of expression.

Mr. Levant expressed concerns about the bill’s impact on his outlet, foreseeing increased scrutiny and potential legal action under the legislation. The government defends the bill as necessary to create a safer online environment.

“Social media is ubiquitous,” stated Justice Minister Arif Virani to a parliamentary committee, emphasizing the need to address the dangers and harmful content present online.
