Driver involved in fatal accident that claimed lives of two young girls in Wimbledon will not face charges
A woman who crashed a Land Rover into a prep school in Wimbledon, killing two 8-year-old girls, will not face prosecution as it was revealed she had undiagnosed epilepsy.
Selena Lau and Nuria Sajjad lost their lives when Claire Freemantle’s car breached the fence of The Study Prep School on July 6, 2023.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced on Wednesday that they will not pursue charges, citing Ms. Freemantle’s epileptic seizure as the cause of the accident. Since she was not diagnosed with epilepsy prior to the incident, she cannot be held criminally responsible.
Jaswant Narwal, chief crown prosecutor overseeing the CPS’s London homicide unit, stated, “Following a thorough investigation, we have concluded that there is no basis for criminal prosecution due to the driver’s unexpected epileptic seizure which led to the tragedy.”
Decision Based on Public Interest
“Given that the driver had no way to foresee or prevent this unfortunate event, prosecuting her is not deemed to be in the public interest,” Mr. Narwal added.
Ms. Freemantle claimed to have no memory of the incident after losing consciousness.
The parents of Nuria, Sajjad Butt and Smera Chohan, as well as Selena’s parents, Franky Lau and Jessie Deng, expressed their dissatisfaction with the investigation and the CPS’s decision in a statement. They believe that justice has not been served for their daughters.
