Dutch Passenger Saved in Lake Malawi Plane Crash, 2 Others Missing
Reports from Malawi indicate that a small aircraft crashed into Lake Malawi on Tuesday with three individuals onboard, according to an official. A Dutch passenger managed to survive and was rescued by local fishermen, however, another passenger and the pilot are still missing.
Information Minister Moses Kumkuyu stated that the rescued passenger is a female, but did not disclose her age. She sustained minor injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The crash occurred near the shoreline of Lake Malawi in shallow waters, Kumkuyu reported. He mentioned that the plane has been located and a rescue operation is in progress.
The aircraft involved in the incident is a Cessna C210-type, typically capable of carrying up to six passengers. It was en route from Nkhotakota to Liwonde, both towns located along the shores of Lake Malawi. The aircraft was operated by the Nyasa Express charter airline.
Lake Malawi is the third largest lake in Africa, stretching around 580 kilometers (360 miles) in length, which is more than half of the country’s total length.
