Dutton Pledges to Safeguard Tasmanian Forest Jobs and Industry: Timber First
Labor and the Coalition are engaged in a fierce battle in Tasmania.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has committed to establishing permanent timber production zones in Tasmania to safeguard forest access and revitalize regional employment.
This initiative is a key component of the Coalition’s election strategy, which includes a $124 million regional development package aimed at addressing the “years of neglect” under Labor’s leadership, according to Dutton.
As part of the plan, there will be a $40 million boost to domestic timber manufacturing to reduce reliance on imports and enhance supply chains for the housing and construction sectors.
“Tasmania requires a government that prioritizes jobs and industries, rather than prioritizing bureaucratic processes over regional livelihoods,” Dutton stated.
Support for Salmon, With Limits
Another focal point of the Coalition’s Tasmania-centric approach is its commitment to supporting the state’s struggling salmon industry, which Dutton claims is imperiled by “catastrophic” environmental reviews and bureaucratic delays spearheaded by Labor.
