Edmonton Security Guard Dies in Hospital After Being Shot in Apartment; Two Suspects Arrested and Charged with Murder

The tragic passing of an Edmonton security guard in a downtown apartment building early Friday morning has led to the arrest of two suspects facing murder charges.

Harshandeep Singh, 20, who was on duty at the apartment complex in the Central McDougall neighborhood, was discovered unresponsive in a stairwell following a report of a gunshot at the building at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 6, according to a press release issued by the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) on Dec. 7.

Upon arrival, officers provided immediate medical assistance. Paramedics also arrived and treated Singh before transporting him to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Later that day, two suspects, Evan Rain and Judith Saulteaux, both age 30, were apprehended and charged with first-degree murder in connection to the incident, as stated in the EPS press release. A weapon was seized during their arrest.

Authorities have stated that they do not believe anyone else was involved in the crime. It was mentioned that Singh’s name was made public to aid in the investigation and address public safety concerns.

“The EPS typically does not disclose the name of a deceased individual unless the death is confirmed to be a homicide,” stated EPS homicide staff sergeant Rob Bilawey. “However, in this case, his name is being released for investigative purposes and to allay public safety worries surrounding Mr. Singh’s untimely death.”

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 9.

Detectives are actively investigating the circumstances leading to the shooting and encourage anyone with information to reach out to EPS at 780-423-4567. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
