Edmundo González Officially Recognized as Winner of Venezuela’s Presidential Election by US
Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Edmundo González Urrutia on his successful campaign.
The United States has officially recognized Edmundo González as the winner of Venezuela’s presidential election and is calling for a peaceful transfer of power from President Nicolás Maduro.
In a statement on Thursday, Blinken stated that “overwhelming evidence” from polling stations confirmed that González received more votes than Maduro.
“It is clear to the United States and the Venezuelan people that Edmundo González Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election,” Blinken said. “We congratulate Edmundo González Urrutia on his successful campaign. Now is the time for the Venezuelan parties to begin discussions on a respectful, peaceful transition in accordance with Venezuelan electoral law and the wishes of the Venezuelan people.”
