Egypt Reinstates e-Visa for Canadian Tourists Following Expensive Process, Says Joly
Canada announces that Egypt will soon no longer require cumbersome visas for Canadian tourists, almost a year after Cairo implemented this measure for Canadian passport holders.
Last October, Egypt suspended the ability of Canadians to obtain a visa online or upon arrival in Egypt, which previously cost around $35 for a single person.
Since then, Canadians have had to pay $150 and submit an application form, passport, and itinerary by mail to obtain a visa.
Egyptian officials stated that they implemented this more difficult process in response to Canada making it harder for Egyptian citizens to obtain visas, although The Canadian Press could not verify these reports.
Global Affairs Canada reports that Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, informed Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly in a meeting on Monday that Canadians will soon be able to use the simplified process once again.
The Egyptian embassy in Ottawa has not yet responded to a request for confirmation of this change and when it will take effect.

Canada’s report on the meeting on Monday indicates that both ministers discussed “the possibility of waiving the requirement of prior-entry visas for Canadian citizens traveling to Egypt.”
“Minister Abdelatty agreed that Egypt will take this step very soon, and it will be announced in due time,” the report states.
