Elections BC Discovers 861 Uncounted Votes and Unreported Ballots
It has been revealed by British Columbia’s election agency that a ballot box containing 861 votes was not counted in the recent provincial election. Additionally, other errors were discovered, including 14 votes that were not reported in a closely contested riding won by the NDP.
Elections BC clarified that the omission of the ballot box did not impact the result in Prince George-Mackenzie. However, the unreported votes in Surrey-Guildford were only found last week during preparations for a judicial recount in the riding. Garry Begg’s narrow 27-vote win in this riding helped the New Democrats secure a one-seat majority government.
B.C.’s chief electoral officer, Anton Boegman, stated that the identification of the error in the Surrey-Guildford count led to a provincewide review.
This review, conducted from last Wednesday to Sunday, uncovered “data entry omissions” which resulted in inaccuracies in the vote counts of 69 out of the province’s 93 ridings.
The statement assured that the unreported votes in each district were small in number and did not impact the outcome. However, judicial recounts are pending in Surrey-Guildford and Kelowna Centre.
A recount of the ballot box in Prince George-Mackenzie, where B.C. Conservative Kiel Giddens won comfortably, has been requested.
