Eleven Municipalities in Ontario and Saskatchewan Partner with Ottawa to Provide Housing for Homeless
The federal government has entered into agreements with nine additional municipalities in Ontario and two in Saskatchewan to tackle homelessness.
These agreements total $91 million over a two-year period and aim to support the municipalities’ plans to address encampments.
These plans include the establishment of new shelter spaces and the expansion of transitional housing options.
Ontario municipalities such as Toronto, Durham, Peel, York, Hamilton, Niagara, Waterloo, Ottawa, and Sudbury, along with Saskatoon and Regina in Saskatchewan, are among those who signed agreements.
Housing Minister Nathaniel Erskine-Smith also mentioned that deals have been made with all other provinces and territories, with details set to be announced in the upcoming weeks.
He noted that Ottawa was unable to establish provincial partnerships with Ontario and Saskatchewan due to the lack of matching contributions from these provinces.
