Energy Bonus Activated Following Coal-Plant Resurrection
A New South Wales (NSW) offer to heavily subsidise batteries for homes with rooftop solar systems has been described as a crucial step in the transition to renewable energy, as the state continues to support Australia’s largest coal-fired power plant.
Announced on May 24, the plan aims to help over one million households with solar panels save up to $2400 (US$1590) in the initial costs of battery installation.
This initiative follows a decision to extend the operation of Australia’s biggest coal-fired generator, the Eraring plant, to ensure reliable energy supply during the ongoing transition to renewables.
Energy Minister Penny Sharpe emphasized that promoting household batteries is part of the government’s strategy to enhance the reliability of the state power grid.
She defended the Eraring deal despite criticism from environmental groups and renewable energy advocates, stating that it is necessary for managing the state’s transition to cleaner energy sources.
Official projections suggest that NSW may not meet its emission reduction targets without such interventions in the energy sector.
Under the battery subsidy scheme, homes and businesses looking to install solar panels will receive incentives integrated into their quotes for new solar and battery systems.
Additionally, there will be monetary rewards for connecting batteries to virtual power plants, which consolidate multiple home batteries to stabilize energy supply.
These incentives will be available starting in November and will be implemented through approved suppliers.
Rewiring Australia, a group advocating for rapid decarbonization through electrification, supported the subsidy as a means to promote solar power and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
However, Solar Citizens, an organization promoting solar power, expressed concerns about the government’s mixed messages regarding energy policy and encouraged a clearer commitment to renewable energy.
