Enrolment at Concordia University in Montreal Declines After Increase in Tuition Fees

Concordia University in Montreal has seen a nearly 30 percent decrease in new registrations of out-of-province students following a tuition increase imposed by the Quebec government last year.

The university also reports an 11 percent drop in enrolment of international students compared to the previous year.

The Quebec government raised tuition for out-of-province students from $9,000 to $12,000 in an attempt to protect the French language. However, Quebec’s two largest English-language universities, including McGill University, are challenging this decision.

While McGill University has not yet released final enrolment numbers, it mentioned in December that it was experiencing a 20 percent decline in out-of-province applicants.

Both universities are taking legal action against the Quebec government regarding the new tuition policy, citing discrimination.

Higher Education Minister Pascale Déry has not responded to requests for comment.
