Ex-President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines detained on International Criminal Court order
Duterte was taken into custody on Tuesday following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity related to his anti-drug campaign.
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested after the ICC issued the warrant over the deadly anti-drug campaign conducted during his time in office.
“Early this morning, INTERPOL Manila received the official copy of the warrant of arrest from the International Criminal Court,” the Presidential Communications Office said in a statement, as reported by local media GMA News reported.
The former president was taken into custody immediately after arriving in Manila from Hong Kong on suspicions of crimes against humanity.
Duterte, who held office from 2016 to 2022, had previously indicated his willingness to cooperate if an ICC arrest warrant was issued.
