Experts Say Beijing’s Influence is ‘Critical’ on Campbell’s Pacific Islands Trip

Allowing Beijing access to the Pacific Islands would pose a threat to air and sea routes crucial for trade by American allies and partners, according to an expert.

A maritime strategy specialist emphasized the importance of Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell’s visit to the Pacific Islands, describing it as “critical” amid growing strategic concerns in the region.

Campbell led a U.S. delegation to Vanuatu to inaugurate a new U.S. embassy following the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders meeting in Tonga. During the forum, China also sent its largest delegation ever.

The visit is part of the White House’s Pacific Partnership Strategy unveiled by the Biden administration in September 2022 in response to China’s increasing influence campaigns in the region and aggressive actions in the South China Sea.

Experts interviewed by The Epoch Times highlighted the Pacific region’s significance in deterring a potential conflict over Taiwan, a democratic island claimed by mainland China’s Communist Party (CCP).

James Holmes, a professor at the U.S. Naval War College, stressed the strategic value of the Pacific Islands, citing their importance during World War II as bases for U.S. military operations against the Japanese empire.

Beijing’s desire to limit U.S. access to these islands is seen as advantageous to the Chinese military in potential conflicts, providing time to advance their positions in the region before U.S. forces can respond effectively.

Additionally, ceding access to the Pacific Islands could enable Beijing to threaten vital trade routes used by American allies and partners, aside from its implications in military scenarios.

Furthermore, experts recommend a united front comprising the United States, Taiwan, Japan, and other democracies in the region to counter China’s ambitions and ensure stability in the Pacific.

While acknowledging the need for engagement with Pacific Island nations, analysts caution against Chinese efforts to undermine democracy and Taiwan’s interests, often tied to financial aid provided by Beijing.

In conclusion, maintaining strong alliances and partnerships in the Pacific region is vital to thwarting attempts by China to assert dominance and ensuring a peaceful and secure environment.
