Explosion in Kabul’s Minibus Leaves 2 Dead and 14 Injured civilians
Kabul—An explosion occurred in a largely Shiite Muslim neighborhood in the Afghan capital of Kabul, resulting in the deaths of at least two civilians and injuries to 14 others, according to a Taliban official on Saturday. This marked the first attack in the country in 2024.
Khalid Zadran, a police spokesman, stated that the explosion took place in the western part of the city, specifically in the Dashti Barchi area. An investigation has been initiated by the police.
Although no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, the Islamic State group’s affiliate in the region has previously targeted Shiite schools, hospitals, and mosques in the same area.
In a similar incident in November, the IS claimed responsibility for a minibus explosion that led to seven casualties and 20 injuries in the same Kabul area.
Furthermore, on October 26, four individuals were killed and seven were wounded in an explosion at a sports club in the same neighborhood. IS also took responsibility for that attack.
Taliban Defense Minister Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid mentioned last week that there was a 90% decrease in attacks by the IS affiliate in the past year.
The IS affiliate has been a significant adversary of the Taliban since the latter gained control of Afghanistan in August 2021. IS militants have carried out attacks in Kabul and northern provinces, often targeting Shiites, who are considered apostates by IS.
