Farnworth: Hackers Potentially Breached 22 BC Government Inboxes, Exposing Data of 19 Employees

According to British Columbia’s public safety minister, a cyber attack on the province’s networks last month may have accessed 22 government email inboxes containing sensitive personal information on 19 employees.

Mike Farnworth reassures that there is no evidence of the general public’s information being compromised, and investigators have not found any instances of misuse of the accessed information by the criminals.

Mr. Farnworth mentions that the investigation is ongoing, and the evidence so far points towards state or state-sponsored actors as the ones responsible for the attack.

While the minister did not disclose the specific workplaces of the affected employees, he did clarify that they belong to the public service, not the government cabinet.

Mr. Farnworth assures that the employees have been notified and will receive credit monitoring and assistance with identity protection.

This cyber breach is one of several recent incidents in the province, including attacks on the First Nations Health Authority and a breach that led to the temporary shutdown of London Drugs stores across Western Canada.
