Federal Government Lifts Boycott on Advertising Spending on Meta Platforms
The federal government has lifted its boycott on purchasing advertisements on Meta platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
The decision was confirmed by the Privy Council Office, as reported by CTV news.
In July 2023, Ottawa had halted buying ad space from Facebook’s parent company after it blocked news content on its platforms in Canada.
This move by Meta was a response to a federal law mandating digital companies to compensate Canadian media outlets for sharing their content in the country.
While Meta continues to block news content for Canadian users, the federal government did spend $100,000 on space for a campaign launched in January on Facebook and Instagram.
This campaign highlights the government’s GST/HST exemption on specific items, such as restaurant bills and children’s clothing, which is in effect until Feb. 15.
