Firearms Officer Set to Face Gross Misconduct Hearing Regarding the Shooting of Jermaine Baker

A police firearms officer, referred to as W80, who fatally shot Jermaine Baker in 2015, will face a gross misconduct hearing following a ruling by the UK Supreme Court. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) upheld the decision to hold the hearing after an independent investigation into the shooting. W80 fired at Baker during an operation to prevent a gangster from being freed from a prison van. This comes shortly after another police officer, identified as NX121, was charged with the murder of Chris Kaba. Both Baker and Kaba were unarmed at the time of their deaths. The IOPC has asked another police force to hold the hearing for W80 to ensure the independence of the process. The Metropolitan Police, W80’s colleagues, have expressed their disapproval of the decision and threatened to lay down their weapons.
