First Confirmed Case of More Severe Mpox Strain in Manitoba, Canada
The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed the country’s first case of a more severe type of mpox in a person in Manitoba, although it says the risk to the general population remains low.
The agency indicates that the travel-related case is linked to an ongoing outbreak of clade 1 mpox in central and eastern Africa.
The individual sought medical attention for mpox symptoms in Canada shortly after returning and is currently isolating, with contact tracing underway.
While clade 2 mpox has been present in Canada since 2022, this marks the first confirmed case of clade 1 in the country.
Research shows that clade 1 is generally more contagious and results in more severe illness compared to clade 2.
Mpox is a contagious viral infection that causes a painful rash and may be accompanied by symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, and back, joint, and muscle pain.
